Overview

MyTransUnion or more simply 'Credit Freeze', is a regulatory product mandated by the U.S. government for all credit bureaus to allow consumers to 'freeze' their credit profiles when needed. This mandate was a result of the Equifax breach in 2017.

Objective

Create a mobile-first solution for our users to access and freeze their credit profiles within moments from any device. Users will need to accomplish three tasks – freeze, unfreeze and lift their credit status. The product vision for MyTransUnion will be a single product that contains multiple security services offered by TransUnion.

Unfreeze or Lift a Freeze

After understanding the requirements setfourth by the government as well as the technical restrains from our development team, I established working wireframes for the three mandated user tasks – freeze, unfreeze and lift. I began with the 'unfreeze' flow as it seemed the most intuitive and had less functional requirements.

In this flow, the user can take one of two paths – one, remove the current freeze, in which they would simply select the 'Remove' option and proceed through a double confirmation. Secondly, the user could choose to apply a 'Lift' to temporarily deactivate their credit freeze for a specific time period. This would require the user selects both the start and end dates.

Applying a Credit Freeze

When applying a freeze, a user can accomplish this task from both an unfrozen or 'Open' credit status as well as a 'Locked' credit status. However, the user's path will remain the same when applying a freeze. The user will be required to enter a 6-digit security PIN to be used for call-in purposes only. From there, the user can proceed through a double confirmation to a success screen where they will see their new credit status as well as an ad upsell opportunity (MVP).

Edit or Remove a 'Lift' or Temporary Freeze

When a user has a credit status displaying 'Lift' or temporarily unfrozen, they have three paths they can take. The first, they can remove the freeze that is associated with the 'Lift'. Second, they could just cancel the 'Lift', reverting their credit status back to 'Frozen'. Lastly, the user could choose to edit the 'Lift' by choosing a new start and end date. This would cancel the current 'Lift' and apply a brand new one in the backend but will appear as though they are simply editing as to minimize confusion.

Once the wireframes were tested and approved, it was time to move onto creating the UI for MyTransUnion. For MVP however, the business chose to duplicate our current premium product architecture and repurpose it to house the Credit Freeze service. This meant that our solution, both from a functional and interactive standpoint, would have to also fit within the current products already limiting parameters. So, by implimenting the approved UX as well as the redudndent styling (with a few minor updates slipped in there) we arrived at our MVP product that was released in the summer of 2018 as a first to market product.

Visual Design - Future State

With a successful launch across all platforms (native app for both iOS and Android as well as responsive web), I began building for the future. There were so many improvements I wanted to make, not only to the outdated design of our older premium product, but also to the functionality, interactions and ad service.

To accomplish this, I began to reimagine the MyTransUnion product as a unique tool that could be intentionally branded and built to scale along with the other services that would be added down the road. This meant a refined logo, reconstructed global navigation, service specific branding treatements, a whole new design system leveraging new and current patterns and finally a less intrusive and more engaging ad upsell experience that properly adheared to the government mandated conditions.
